Retraction – there IS drama here in Boquete!

Hmm,just a few days later, and I have to print a retraction — there IS drama in Boquete — the Boquete Community Players, to be exact! And their latest production was DELIGHTFUL!

Let me back up and say that, from me, that’s very high praise indeed. I never would have considered community theater to be my “cup of tea”. (I actually fell asleep at a Broadway production of “Phantom of the Opera” – sacrilege  I know, to Broadway fans.) In fact, Mark and I had made the definitive decision NOT to go, when one of the BCP volunteers gave us her set of complimentary tickets. Even after we gratefully said yes, we were a little skeptical about the quality of the production we would see. Shame on us for our lack of imagination!

Instead of just ONE play, this was a compilation of 8 unrelated skits. The plays were selected from over 70 submissions of new short plays — 10 minutes or so. They selected 8 to produce, and titled the collection “Benchwarmers”, because a bench was center stage for each skit.

The actress was Kelsey Kinzer, and her portrayal of an alien on a date was hilarious!

The plots range from the ridiculous ( a dating site for “earthlings” to meet extraterrestrials) to the touching ( a mother and her adult daughter sharing their last July 4 together), and many things in between. It’s hard to pick a favorite, because they all brought out a laugh, or summoned up a tear. Or both. 🙂

Both of these actors were in two skits, with very different accents in each - and great comedic timing!

And of course, no matter how good the writing, the skits wouldn’t have worked without acting that was right on the mark. Who knew there was such talent and imagination here in our little Panamanian mountain town!!

A long time expat (and excellent writer) in Boquete posted his creative review of the production herehttp://www.boqueteguide.com/?p=9852 , if anyone wants to read more. My pictures are from his blog.

Just another unexpected “plus” to Boquete!
